By Joe McHugh On January 31, 2010 NO COMMENTS

Wendy, a Team Beachbody newbie, recently started Slim in 6. She just started the third phase, Burn it Up. This is what she had to say:

Green Belt Instructor’s Course: Week 1 Recap

By Joe McHugh On January 19, 2010 NO COMMENTS

Leaving Detroit for San Diego was a needed change. I love Michigan, but waiting has never been my strong suit. I’d much rather jump right into it, ready or not. That being said, the wait was worth it: 25 degrees in Detroit, 65 degrees in San Diego. ‘Nuf said.

The trip West started off well. Big Brother hooked me up with a Ford Focus, but the kind fellow at the Alamo Rent-a-Car counter saw to it that I enjoyed three weeks in San Diego with the top down in a Spyder convertible at no additional cost. Thank you, Mister Alamo Giving Marines The Hookup Guy.

We checked into the Martial Arts Instructor Center, MAIC, that Friday and immediately suited up for a Physical Fitness Test or PFT. Since the weather has been so completely permissive in MI, with snow and ice on the ground for the past couple months, I hadn’t run

Marine Corps Workout Series: Week 2 Insanity Fitness Test

By Joe McHugh On November 29, 2009 1 COMMENT

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I’m training with Shaun T’s Insanity to prepare for the Green Belt Instructor Course at SOI West, Camp Pendleton. Here are my results after just two weeks of Insanity training:

The drop in switch kicks is attributed to executing the move with poor form the during the Initial Test. However, as you can see, with just two weeks of intense Insanity training, my cardio improved significantly, an average of 30%.

As I progress with the workout program, I fully expect to continue these stellar (some might call “insane”) results. The real proof will be in January when I start Green Belt Instructor’s Course at SOI West.

10 Nov 1775, Marine Corps Birthday!

By Joe McHugh On November 11, 2009 NO COMMENTS

Yesterday was the 234th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps. There’s a nice short read from Marines.com on the founding of the Marine Corps.

1775: Founding of the Marine Corps
A LEGACY IS BORN

During the American Revolution, many important political discussions took place in the inns and taverns of Philadelphia, including the founding of the Marine Corps.

A committee of the Continental Congress met at Tun Tavern to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore.

The resolution was approved on November 10, 1775, officially forming the Continental Marines.

As the first order of business, Samuel Nicholas became Commandant of the newly formed Marines. Tun Tavern’s owner and popular patriot, Robert Mullan, became his first captain and recruiter. They began gathering support and were ready for action by early 1776.

Each year, the Marine Corps marks November 10th with a celebration

Marine Corps Workout Series – Insanity

By Joe McHugh On November 9, 2009 NO COMMENTS

It’s the middle of November, not quite a full month after graduating from Logistics Officer Course, and I’ve started Insanity for the first time. Just today, I received confirmation that I’ll be attending Green Belt Instructor Course in January at SOI West (School of Infantry), Camp Pendleton, CA.

In addition to training to the standards of the Marine Corps Green Belt, part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP), I’ll be put through myriad physical fitness tests to include the O-Course.

For those of you who haven’t yet had the pleasure of navigating the Obstacle Course, watch this video. Notice the scaling walls, balance log, high bar, jumping high logs, parallel bars and climbing rope climb to finish it off. Every obstacle in the course tests your agility and core strength. As you improve in both areas, the speed with which you pass through the course will improve as well. Insanity is the perfect program for

20090406 PFT

By Joe McHugh On April 11, 2009 NO COMMENTS

My second Personal PFT while at TBS showed an improvement both in sit-ups and pull-ups with a drop in run time. There's not really any good reason for the poor run time other than it just being a slow day. That happens sometimes. On the other hand, sit-ups improved as did the pull-ups. Not only did I do those before running, I had extra motivation that day as well. Still not good enough to sit on my laurels, but it's an improvement.

3 mile time: 21:52
Situps: 99
Pullups: 19

Score: 270/300

My personal best PFT score was a 283 at OCS in December 2008. 100 sit-ups, 19 pull-ups and a run time of 20:13. Best run time was my initial PFT at OCS in October 2008, 19:59. Working to get back to that.

Week 2: Modifcations and Adjustments

By Vince Levigne On April 9, 2009 NO COMMENTS

Week 1 was a tough, yet glorious week that pushed both the mind and body to the limit.

The purpose of week 2 is to make modifications and adjustments that target specific needs while preventing burnout.  Our personal adjustments included eliminating 100 m sprints and replacing it with a bonus activity (such as soccer or kayaking).

If struggling with a low energy level, add an extra day of rest and reduce the number of workouts.  To battle soreness increase stretching, drink lots of water, and eat a nutritious diet.

Day:

  1. Chin-up test, 7 mile run (time test 1st 3 miles), P90X Chest & Back DVD
  2. 10 400m sprints for time, 6 100m sprints, P90X Plyometrics DVD
  3. P90X Shoulders & Arms DVD, Free Swim, P90X Ab Ripper X DVD
  4. 4 800m sprints for time, 6 300m sprints for time, P90X Yoga X DVD
  5. P90X Legs & Back DVD, Free Swim
  6. P90X Kenpo X DVD, Bonus Activity (Indoor Soccer Game)
  7. REST!!!

Week 1: Intense Combination of P90X and Running

By Vince Levigne On March 28, 2009 NO COMMENTS

The purpose of week 1 was to establish the daily routine and gather baseline data.

Day:
  1. Chin-up test, 7 mile run (time test 1st 3 miles), P90X Chest & Back DVD
  2. 10 400m sprints for time, 6 100m sprints, P90X Plyometrics DVD
  3. P90X Shoulders & Arms DVD, Free Swim, P90X Ab Ripper X DVD
  4. 4 800m sprints for time, 6 300m sprints for time, P90X Yoga X DVD
  5. P90X Legs & Back DVD, Free Swim
  6. P90X Kenpo X DVD, Bonus Activity (Indoor Soccer Game)
  7. REST!!!

The first time through is rough.  Don't get discouraged if your timed runs are slow or if your muscles are fatigued by week's end.  No shame in including an extra day of rest or modifying the workout to meet your needs.

Remember to eat properly.  It is important to increase your caloric intake during this intense training time.

We always had a P90X Recovery Drink or Whey Protein Smoothie following P90X workouts with weights.

20090301 PFT

By Joe McHugh On March 1, 2009 2 COMMENTs

I kicked off my Personal PFT program today of which today's PFT was my first since my TBS initial PFT in December. There's good news and bad news. Good news is that I didn't slow too much with a run time of 20:53 for 3 miles. The bad news is that I was less than stellar on situps (91/100) and pullups (14/20). I'm hopeful that by doing the pullups and situps before the run next time, my performance will improve. Nevertheless, not bad, but in need of much improvement.

3 mile time: 20:53
Situps: 91
Pullups: 14

Score: 243/300
